N.M. CU Trade Group: New House Member Pledged Support of Tax Exemption

The newest House member already has pledged her support for the federal credit union tax exemption, according to Paul Stull, chief executive officer of the Credit Union Association of New Mexico.

On Tuesday, Melanie Stansbury, a Democrat, defeated Republican state Sen. Mark Moores in a seat that was vacated by Interior Sec. Deb Haaland.

“Melanie took time to meet virtually with New Mexico credit union leaders and expressed her support for maintaining our tax-exempt status and praised credit unions for their hard work during the pandemic with PPP loans and more,” Stull said.

CUNA’s Political Action Committee, CULAC, contributed $5,000 to Stansbury’s campaign.

Banking trade groups have renewed their attack on the credit union tax exemption this year, but so far the argument has not gained much traction on Capitol Hill.
